Anti-Islam Protest #1, #2, #3, #4 - Just as I snapped this photo, on City of Toronto property at Ryerson University, a man immediately came over to me and asked me not to take photos. I vigorously defended my right to take photos on public property, even though I understood his reasons: he clearly believed that the man wearing the infidel sign was spreading hate. I can't argue with that. A minute or so later, a woman asked me what I planned to do with the photo, and then we got into a discussion about whether the sign was hate speech or free speech. I am sure a court would have to decide that, though I think it's fairly obvious. It appeared to me that the women with whom I was speaking was uncomfortable with the idea of this man getting publicity, even though she said that they tried to interest the news media about what was happening. She recognized that this would certainly give the man publicity. The police were not interested in doing anything either, probably because the line that separates hate speech from free speech is narrow and ill-defined. I decided to take a few more shots, and did get a photo of the impromptu response sign, which the man who asked me not to take photos held up to the other man's face. I think I got both sides of the incident.
